dc.description.abstractGlass is a commonly used material in our community. It is used in making windows, packaging, medical equipment and fibre optics to mention but a few. After this glass is used it is usually discarded to the environment. The non-decomposable nature of waste glass makes its management in an environmentally sound manner challenging. The only way therefore to reduce glass waste in the environment is to recycle it into new products like bottles, windows and other glass products. Another way of utilizing glass waste is to crush it into very small particles that are relatively similar to sand. This crushed recycled glass can be mixed with cement and used in construction or solely used as a filtration media. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of recycled crushed glass in purification of water and this inturn would help make better use of waste glass in the community and also find alternative methods of purifying water. This was achieved by first assessing the availability of waste glass in the community and the different ways it is utilised and treated. This was done through qualitative research methods and desk research. The crushing of glass was done manually with a motor and pestle thereafter crushed into granulated form with a ball mill. A dual filter media filtration column with gravel as the base media was built and filtration experiments carried out with grey water. The water was tested for pH, turbidity, total suspended solids, electric conductivity, color and temperature parameters before and after filtration. The filtration results showed significant improvent in most of the tested parameters: suspended slids reduced by 89.12%, electric conductivity decreased by 6.86%, pH increased to 9.75, the color of the wter improved by 76.66% and the turbidity of the water improved by 78.12%. This confirmed that recycled glass has the potential to work as a filtration material.en_US
