dc.description.abstractThe study was done in kachung parish, Agwata sub county, Dokolo District of northern Uganda and focused on assessing the utilization of kachung forest reserve by the local community and its implication to sustainability. Multi-stage sampling procedures were used to select respondents for the study. The data collected for this study was got from 60 household respondents to which 60 closed and open ended questionnaires were administered. The data was analyzes using descriptive statistic to get their frequencies using percentages. The study reveal that there are a number of forest products that are being utilized by the local people of kachung parish that include both woody and non woody forest products and services and they are harvested in different quantities. The results further reveal that most of the respondents were female (70%), married and aged between 20-39 years. The results also show that firewood production (67.7%) and agriculture (58.1%) greatly affect the utilization of forest products among others. In conclusion, the study found that the local community utilizes most of the forest products and it benefits them in a number of ways and that income, education level and family size determine the quantity harvested of forest products. The forest resource is also at a fast depleting rate due to poor management. The policy recommendation from this study reveal that the government should embark on policies and reforms that will enhance the participatory approach to forest management so as to ensure its sustainability and continued supply of the fast depleting forest resources and if possible they should also encourage afforestation by providing subsidies and incentives to the local people inform of free seedlings to boost individual tree planting to avoid encroaching in to the forest reserve which could threaten utilization of forest products and its sustainability. The forest reserve should not be alter to other land use and local communities should be sensitized on value of having few and educated household members Further research should be conducted on the challenges faced by the local community in the utilization of forest products and it implication on sustainability and different methods used to harvest each of those forest products to ensure its sustainability.
