Mortar is a masonry product which is a matrix of concrete. It consists of binder and fine aggregates and its strength is a special concern to the engineer because mortar is responsible for giving protection to the outer parts of the structure as well as at brick joints in masonry wall system. The purpose of this research is to investigate the compressive strength of mortar, which is an important mechanical property, by replacing sand with stone dust. The aim of this is to minimize the increasing demand of sand, checking the appropriateness of stone dust as a construction material so as to ensure both solid waste minimization and recovery by exchanging stone dust with sand. Sand is becoming scarcer and costlier due to its non-availability and at times non- conformity to the requirements. More so, the effects of sand extraction are unfriendly to the environment. Sand was replaced by stone dust at 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% by weight of sand 1:4 mix ratio and 0.40 water-cement ratio. In this study, a set of mortar cubes were cast and tested for compressive strength after 7 and 28 days of moist curing. The test results indicated that 30% replacement of fine aggregate with stone dust gives the optimum compressive strength of mortar.en_US
