ItemEvaluation of the different carbon capture and storage technological methods for possible application in the cement industry in Uganda(Makerere University, 2024) Agaba, Alvin ShaunThe implementation of carbon capture, storage and use in cement industry is more of a necessity than an option in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and meet set climate targets. The effect of increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere on climate change is a major driving force for development of advanced CO2 management options. The amount of CO2 emitted during cement manufacturing processes is a cause of great concern and, therefore, has to be tackled. Several technologies are available and under development for the separation of CO2 from flue gases in new and existing cement manufacturing plants. This study intends to provide a general overview of the different CO2 capture technologies suitable for application in cement industry and assess the potential of their application in cement industry in Uganda with Kampala Cement Industry as case study. It also provides an examination of the regulatory and policy laws as related to carbon, capture, storage and usage technologies as well as their relevance to the cement industry and evaluation. Following the research carried out, the best available choice was determined as post-combustion carbon capture by amine absorption or scrubbing. However, economic constraints still limit implementation of carbon capture and storage technologies in the cement industry as cost of setup have proved to be expensive and additional support from government and outside investors is required to move these projects forward.
