Imagery in the selected Ganda proverbs.

Abstract

The study critically analyses the images used in the selected Ganda proverbs. It is guided by two objectives: the first one is, to analyze imagery in the selected Ganda proverbs and the other is to analyze the language used in the proverbs in order to identify the images in these selected proverbs. This study was both field and library based, employing a qualitative approach. Proverbs are seen as a source of advise, entertainment and a medium of instruction that enhances the young children's learning of the cultural values, customs and norms of their society. This study findings reveal that the images portrayed in the proverbs bring out a clear meaning in the proverb. This study is also qualitative, the fact that it also portrays other literary elements found in these selected proverbs, for example how they are portrayed and what meaning they portray. Finally the study recommends that curriculum designers of primary and secondary schools put emphasis on the integration of oral literature in the Literature teaching syllabus to help preserve oral literature genres so that oral literature is made more available and aware to the young generation for provision of moral lessons and guidance in line with our cultural norms.
