Design and Implementation of a Smart Monitoring and Control System for Electric Vehicle Charging
Abstract
This report documents my final year project whose main objective was to design and implement a
smart monitoring and control system for electric vehicle charging. It describes the engineering
procedures used to implement this system and also the project results and recommendations.
The smart monitoring system consists of the hardware that is sensor based and a software part which
is basically an android application that was built using flutter for the front end and firebase for the
back end. The main processing unit is a raspberry pi 4, a 1.5GHz 64 bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A72
with an on-board wireless LAN and Bluetooth. The sensor Programs were built in python using
Thorny IDE preinstalled on raspberry pi.
The sensors are deployed around the electric vehicles traction battery pack to capture the desired
parameters during electric vehicle charging and processed and relayed to the backend of the
application and later displayed on the mobile application in real time.
This system was then deployed and tested on the KIIRA EV-Africa’s first electric vehicle.
