Abstract
Errors on construction sites occur frequently and can be costly for the contractors and owners of
constructed facilities This study aimed at investigating the effect of materials control on defects in
buildings in Kampala.
The study specifically assessed the main causes of defects, determined the rate at which quality
control was implemented and Identified ways how to control the costs of quality. The research was
basically qualitative and quantitative in nature whereby questionaires were issued out to
construction professionals in order to collect the required data and existing information in journals
and articles on the internet. The data was finally annalysed using Microsoft excel program and
SPSS and discussions and interpretations were done basing on the annalysis.
The study revealed that a few of the studied construction sites in kampala effectively adopted
quality control and assurance procedures which implies that the bigger percentage were not
effectively using them. This could ultimately lead to defects in buildings. For defective building
to be controlled, the study recomended alternate ways which included; ensuring supervision and
corrective checks for materials, through coming up with a quality system that includes employees
and by ensuring qualified professional personnel are employed for the project.
