Stress, anxiety and substance abuse among university students in Central Kampala

Abstract

The study aimed at examining the relationship between stress, anxiety and substance abuse among university students. In order to achieve the above objective, a sample of 200 university students were examined. This cross sectional study was quantitative in nature and a correlational survey design was adopted. Simple random sampling technique was used for the selection of participants. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Scientist (SPSS version 23). Pearson correlation was adopted to test the significance of the hypothesis and the findings showed that there is a significant relationship between stress and anxiety among University students as well as a significant relationship between anxiety and substance abuse among University students. However, the results revealed a no significant relationship between stress and substance abuse among university students.
