Assessing the spatial distribution and accessibility of green spaces in Kampala city, a case study of central division of Kampala city.
Abstract
Kampala city strives to become an attractive and sustainable city by 2040. Continued population
growth is a major reason for the need to density within the existing urban structures. But more
inhabitants will also increase pressure on usage and demand for green space in the city. Green
space is of importance for human well-being and health, especially in urban environments.
However, the importance of green space is being marginalized in current debate and urban
planning, due to the intensive focus on densification. The relevance of green space as an
environmental quality has neither been recognized sufficiently in discussions on environmental
justice. Previous policy and research have not integrated some dimensions when assessing green
space distribution. Hence this case study aimed to investigate the factors that influenced the
spatial distribution of green areas in central division of Kampala city. Specific Objectives of this
study include the following;
a) To find out space usage and activities of green spaces.
b) To examine the factors influencing the availability of green spaces in central division of
Kampala
c) To examine the major causes and reasons leading to inaccessibility of green spaces
d) To recommend practical solutions that can be used for better and accessibility of green
spaces in central division of Kampala city.
Data collection techniques and instrument include, interview, questionnaire, photography among
many others to mention but a few.
Factors Influencing the Availability of Green Open Space in Kampala Central Division include
the following to mention but a few; Population growth, Outward expansion of the Commercial
area (CBD), Changes in land use function, Corruption among the division officers, the influence
of community leaders (the veterans)
Recommendations include, good design, crime prevention through environmental design(cpted),
design for inclusivity, green gentrification.
In conclusion, green spaces like Centenary park, Constitutional Square, Sheraton Garden,
Kitante p/s, Kampala Golf Course, Agha khan p/s, Buganda Road p/s, Railway Park, Kololo
Airstrip from the planning parameters are not effectively planned for though it has most facilities
and they are turning into something else. This is due to the existence of some challenges
