The impact of perceived work environment on employee motivation and job performance among the support staff of Makerere University
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between work environment, employee motivation and job performance among the support staff in Makerere University. The study sought to achive three main objectives which are; to determine the relationship between physical work environment and job performance; to determine the relationship between employee motivation and job performance; and to determine the relationship between work environment and employee motivation. The study used a sample of 100 respondents who were adopted using random sampling technique. Data was collected using interviews with survey questionnaires and later analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Scientists) version 23. The findings show that show that there is a statistically significant positive correlation of Work Environment with Job Performance (r=0.184, p<0.01). The findings also show that there is a statistically significant positive correlation of work environment scores with employee motivation scores (r=0.523, p<0.01). Furthermore, the findings also show that there is a statistically significant positive correlation of employee motivation with job performance (r=0.089, p<0.01). It was therefore recommended that organizations should have a good program in place for their employees work life balance as this can be a great factor to motivate and retain them and that employers should have in place a good working environments for their employees in order to boost their morale and make them more efficient.
