Opportunities for Agritourism Development in the Lake Victoria Crescent Ecological Zone: case study of peri-urban areas of Kampala and Wakiso districts
Abstract
The study assessed the opportunities for agritourism development in the Lake Victoria Crescent Ecological Zone. It was guided by the following objectives; to profile agro-enterprises in the Lake Victoria Crescent Zone, to examine the practices at the farm with potential for attracting tourists and to examine the challenges to the development of agritourism based on the farmers' perspectives. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data accessed at One Acre Farm and Guide Leisure Farm as well as key informant interviews. The Study carried out showed that are various ago-enterpises such as crop production, piggery, vegetable growing, fish farming, rabbit rearing among others. The study also showed that they are many constraints for agritourism development which included limited funds, low levels of technology, limited agritourism awareness, limited accommodation facilities, diseases that affect Afro-enterprises and poor documentation.
