Irony in selected Lango proverbs

Abstract

This study focuses on the portrayal of irony in Lango proverbs. It also looks at how these ironical Lango proverbs are relevant in the context of the Lango community and the consequent moral lessons that are derived from them.Two methodologies have been used to gather and make meaning out of the information that has been gathered that is: interviewing and textual analysis. These two methods have formed the backbone of the research study. There are key findings that have been made out of this research. One of them is that few scholars have dedicated themselves to not only the study of Lango proverbs but also, the culture of the Lango people as a whole. Through this research, it has also been discovered that the Lango culture is rich in terms of proverbs and their meanings and contexts in which they apply. The Lango proverbs serve several purposes including sounding warnings and improving how an individual is supposed to relate with the other members of society.
