Examining the impact of changing climate on crop production in Uganda
Abstract
The study examined the impact of changing climate on crop production in Uganda; case study of
Lwebitakuli Sub-County in Ssembabule District. The study was guided by three study objective;
to investigate the to find out the major crop types most affected by climate change, to establish the
trend in mean annual rainfall received in Ssembabule for the period 2010-2019, and to examine
the impact of climate change on crop yields in the period 2010-2019. The study used two research
designs; cross-sectional whereby data on crop production was obtained from the District while the
longitudinal design helped to generate secondary data for rainfall/precipitation from Climate
Change Knowledge Portal. The study considered a period of 10 years; between 2010 and 2019.
The study involved more male farmers (66.67%) relative to female farmers who constituted
33.33%. Majority of the respondents were primary school completed (33.33%), followed by
secondary completed farmers (24.56%), those without any academic attainment (22.81%), and
tertiary level farmers (19.3%). Most farmers responded that cassava was the mostly affected crop;
