Abstract
This is a compilation of all the documentation for the Smart Water Metering and Payment (SWAMP) system. The documents were created at different stages of development and implementation of the project idea. The first document included in this compilation is the Software Design Document (SDD) which describes the architecture and system design of the Smart Water Metering and Payment system (SWAMP). The SDD also specifies the structure and design of modules of SWAMP. The second document included in this compilation is the Project Report which describes the implementation process and tests carried out for SWAMP. The third document is the User Manual for SWAMP that guides a user on how to interact with the implemented system.
Description
SWAMP is a system developed as a cheap and more efficient alternative to providing water to vulnerable communities. One of the more efficient ways of providing water to these communities at the moment is in 2012, NWSC embarked on the installation of prepaid water meters to enable people residing in city slums to access clean and affordable water. “A prepaid water meter is a device which measures the paid upfront amount of water supplied to a consumer. Consumers prepay for their water demands (in advance) and are issued a chip loaded with tokens, which they use to fetch water at the kiosk during any time (day and night)”. Installing prepaid meters in different areas in Kampala provided some relief to communities in these areas by giving relative access to clean water. While prepaid meters have had a number of benefits, they have also had shortcomings some of which include prepaid meters being expensive, tokens being expensive, and breakdowns but to mention a few. SWAMP is a system that seeks to fill the gaps and solve the issues created by these shortcomings.
