Impact of bird type and bedding material on quality of chicken litter, a case of Kampala and Wakiso district

The global production of chicken manure is estimated to be 457 million tonnes per year. Chicken manure contains most nutrients that could be applied as a fertilizer to plants. The concentration of nutrients in poultry manure differs according to bird type, age of the birds, bedding material used and several other factors. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of bird type and bedding material on the quality of chicken litter is vital in evaluating which bird type of poultry and under which bedding material ensures high quality litter that the farmers will use to ensure sustainable production.
A total of 30 Litter samples of either wood shavings or coffee husks as bedding material were collected from chicken farmers within Kampala and Wakiso districts and these were analyzed from the soil lab of Makerere University for their chemical composition.
