Design and implementation of an environmental monitoring station: a web of things approach
Abstract
While wireless sensor networks have been extensively studied in the past few years, most results are of theoretical nature and were obtained outside of a practical context. This can be problematic for real applications, especially in the area of environmental monitoring where many factors, such as harsh weather conditions, can greatly influence the performance of such a network, while reliable delivery and high-quality measurements are required. They are used to monitor different environmental variables like air, temperature, soil moisture, pressure among others. When used together with web of things, interconnection of different devices irrespective of their protocols and functionality is made possible. This project aimed to combine the Web of Things (WoT) and the wireless sensor networks by interconnecting different devices and make them communicate via a well known and developed web browser. When the received values go above threshold or below, a control system is also implemented to use these values to trigger other devices like an irrigation pump.
