Ingenuity in oral performances: a case study of selected folk songs that concern marriage among the Basoga
Abstract
This study analyses the ingenuity in Oral performance, selected folk songs concerning marriage among the basoga. This study approaches the selected folk based on different occasions of their performance and how they involved different aspects in the marriage process. The selected songs involve activities which precede marriage such as introduction (okwandhula), paying the dowry (Omwandhu) to the parents of the young woman. Activities which happen during marriage include polygamy, child up-bringing and issues like divorce which proceeds a failed marriage process. This study aims at how the performance of the selected folk songs cleverly solve the problems in marriage. The selected songs were creatively performed to handle different issues in marriage like, polygamy and its effects like family instabilities, carelessness in child up-bring, violence among others.
