dc.description.abstract | Over the years, the lives and livelihoods of the communities living within the erosion hotspots of
the kasharesub county have immensely been affected. This has greatly changed the outlook of
community management in the scientific world towards sustainability. This study aimed at impacts
ofsoil erosion on household food securityin Mbarara district Kashare sub county; one of the major
soil erosion hotspot sub catchments with gigantic historical occurrences. Specifically, the study
sought to find out people‟s perception on the causes of soil erosion, the impacts of soil erosion on
household food security and to determine interventions that can be used to control soil erosion in
Kashare subcounty.Across sectional research was under taken using amixedapproach(qualitative
and quantitative methods) where simple random sampling was employed in selection of the
households and purposive sampling on the key informants. Data was collected through field
surveys, interviews and direct field observations; and then analyzed using them aticcontent analysis
where descriptive statistics (percentages and frequencies) were generated in Microsoft excel spread
sheets and then presented inform of tables, pie charts and bar graphs. The study findings revealed
that mulching (89.36%), grass planting (44.68%), agroforestry (53.19%), afforestation and
reforestation (70.21%), contour ploughing (48.94%), appropriate farming practices (40.43%),
terracing (82.98%), as the dominant socio-ecological coping strategies the community should
undertake towards building and enhancing their resilience. The study therefore established that
continuous practicing of soil erosion control measures through afforestation, agroforestry,
mulching, terracing, proper farming methods would reduce erosion processes in the area | en_US |
