dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the awareness of and adaptation to climate change among residents of selected cells in Lira City. The research objectives were to determine the extent to which local people are aware of weather and climate trends over the last 10 years and to evaluate climate change adaptation and mitigation interventions in Lira City.
The study employed a comprehensive survey approach, collecting data from a representative sample of residents in the selected cells of Lira City. Data analysis involved both quantitative and qualitative methods, with findings revealing a notable level of awareness among respondents regarding weather and climate trends. A significant majority demonstrated knowledge of the timing and changes in rainfall patterns, as well as the impacts of these changes, particularly floods and droughts.
Furthermore, the study uncovered a range of climate change adaptation and mitigation initiatives in Lira City. These initiatives encompassed afforestation, agroforestry, drought-tolerant crop cultivation, tree planting campaigns, and the involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in climate change mitigation efforts. Notably, radio emerged as the primary source of weather information, offering a valuable channel for disseminating climate-related information and raising awareness.
However, the study also highlighted areas for improvement. Local level bylaws, critical for regulating climate-related activities, were found to be absent. This absence underscores the need for the development and implementation of policies and regulations at the local level to support and enhance climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of understanding the awareness levels and adaptation strategies of local populations in the face of climate change. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, NGOs, and stakeholders to bolster climate resilience in Lira City and similar regions. | en_US |
