Factors influencing involvement of students in small scale business
Abstract
This study entitled Factors influencing involvement of students in small scale business was carried out in Makerere University which had the objectives: to establish the influence of university factors on student participation in small scale business at Makerere University, to establish the influence of socio-demographic factors on student participation in small scale businesses at Makerere University and to establish the influence of student factors on student participation in small scale business at Makerere University. The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional study using questionnaire approach where a total of 102 respondents were interviewed chosen using simple random sampling. In conclusion, the study has shown that gender impacted engagement in small scale businesses whereby males were more inclined to engage in small scale business than females (p 0.000<0.05), marital status-married students were more willing to engage in small scale business. Course, student’s prior history of engaging in business, and the belief of benefiting financially in business influenced significantly student’s participation in small scale businesses (p (0.003<0.05). None of university factors influenced participation in small scale businesses. The university needs to set up an independent program to encourage people to adopt participation in small scale businesses, this will help to raise job creators thereby helping to alleviate the job employment crisis in the country.
