Analysis of the challenges of the pedagogy of fashion design at institutions of higher learning in Kampala and its effect on the productiveness of graduates and their competitive advantage in the work as fashion designers. A case study of Margaret Trowel School of Industrial and Fine Art (MTSIFA) and YMCA
Abstract
A high percentage of students drop out of the course Fashion Design partly because of the pedagogy challenges that sometimes let to a loss of interest and inspiration to even continue with it as a career. This contributes to the low graduation or success rate of the Department.
The literature study justifies that some of the challenges that students face in institutions within Kampala are academic boredom, poor career choices. uncertainty about what course to study. Poor academic language as well as a lack of previously acquired knowledge. An inability to cope with the transition from high school to tertiary level may also lead to students dropping out of the course because of the huge difference between course content and what they were taught in high school concerning fashion design.
Institutions of fashion design in Kampala have tried to perform fashion pedagogies although their output is less than those of developed countries in form of skills and actual designers.
However, the pedagogy of fashion and design in institutions of higher learning is gradually progressing to match the world standard. Some facilities though not all have been provided especially in institutions of YMCA, Makerere University has some of these facilities installed too even though most of these facilities like sewing machines are either out of date, not working or most of their parts are missing.
Information was obtain through different methods of data collection, including literature review, questionnaire method, interview method. observation method. The items used to obtain some of the information included, phone camera, pen arid paper, audio recorder and the internet being the source of some literature review and images of fashion classes in the developed countries.
