Evaluating the accessibility of tools and materials for fashion and design at Margret trowel school of industrial and fine arts.
Abstract
The study focused on evaluating the accessibility of tools and materials for fashion and
design at Margret Trowel School of Industrial and Fine Arts and the study objective were;to
create awareness about the tools and materials for fashion design among fashion students at
MTSIFA, to bring more understanding about the accessibility of tools and materials for
fashion design from the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth to dateon fashion
students and to safeguard the tools and materials at MTSIFA.
The study adopted, descriptive survey with quantitative and qualitative methods. This design
was suitable since the study was to find out the reasons for accessing the tools and materials
for fashion design at MTSIFA. Purposive and random sampling techniques were adopted by
the researcher to select respondents in order to get information. The sample size was 30
comprisingof students and staff of Margret Trowel school of Industrial Fine Arts. The data
collection methods used include; Observation, Questionnaires and document review.
From the research it was found out that most respondents knew at least some tools used in
fashion and design. From the research it was also found out that students who do fashion and
design access tools and materials used in fashion and design from down town in Kampala.
However, this is quite challenging because locating the places where these tools and materials
are sold is a very big problem.
The study also revealed that there many different ways which can be adopted in as far as
safeguarding the tools and materials used in fashion and design at MTSIFA which include;
keeping them in lockers for proper safety, oiling them especially to avoid rust for example
sewing machine and other metallic tools used in fashion and design, keeping them in dry cool
place for longevity.
From the study the researcher suggested the following recommendations; repairing faulty
machines used in fashion design, use of proper current regulators in the machine systems and
power lines to avoid breakdown of machines which use electricity. increase space in the
fashion design studio to cater for the increasing number of fashion design students, the
university should buy modern machineryand get rid of old machinery in order to avoid
machinery breakdown.
