Energy performance analysis of the commonly used charcoal stoves in Kampala.
Abstract
This project aimed to assess and compare the energy performance of different charcoal stoves commonly used in Kampala. The study involved testing various stoves that is the clay , metal shield and metallic stoves for their thermal efficiency, specific boiling
time, burn rate, specific fuel consumption and fire power. The results obtained show that the metal shield stove had the lowest values of specific fuel consumption of 0.06 , burn rate of 0.004g/min, fire power of 1.91W, specific boiling time OF 38 minutes and
highest value of thermal efficiency of 17.3% making it the most efficient stove evaluated. This was attributed to its proper air circulation and ceramic lining which helps to retain heat. The clay stove is the second efficient stove with specific boiling time of 42 minutes, specific fuel consumption of 0.10, burn rate of 0.006g/min, thermal efficiency of 10.4% and fire power of 2.88W. The metallic stove emerged the least efficient stove with the highest values of specific boiling time of 45 minutes, specific fuel consumption of 0.12, burn rate of 0.007g/min, fire power of 3.22W and lowest value of thermal efficiency of 8.7%. These results obtained therefore will aid in identifying the most effective energy efficient stove designs by stove manufacturers as well as providing recommendations for promoting sustainable cooking practices in Kampala.
