Farmers' knowledge and use of agrochemicals for ginger growing in Butambala district, central Uganda
Abstract
Over the years, agriculture has evolved paving way for introduction of agrochemicals to not only control pests and diseases but also increase production. The purpose of this study was to assess farmer’s knowledge and use of agrochemicals for ginger growing in Bulo, Butambala district. The study adopted a cross sectional research design using qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected from 122 respondents using questionnaires, 5 key informants and 4 focus group discussions. Study results show that majority farmers apply agrochemicals in ginger growing inform of; herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. Furthermore, some farmers apply detergentssuch as Omowhich is mixed with other agrochemicals before spraying to prolong
chemical activity. These chemicals are applied under unhealthy circumstances such as lack of necessary protective gears astestified by majority which is linked to health effects such as flue from polluted air, skin itching, allergies among others. Continuous application of agrochemicals has raised health concerns amongst farmers amidst lack of protective equipment and safe alternative ventures from the government which has left farmers in a tight position hence adopting farmer to farmer consultation to create awarenessamongst themselves. Therefore, government should carry out effective awareness campaigns reaching out to grass rootvillages to educate and sensitize the community about the health challenges associated with agrochemical body contact to gain consciousness and knowledge to protect themselves. Government through the Ministry of Agriculture should strengthen laws and policies that govern importation of agrochemicals to meet international standards as well as provide alternative approaches to ginger growing to protect the local farmer.
