Assessing the profitability of maize in Uganda
Abstract
Maize production and profitability among small scale farmers is significantly low in Uganda. The government and other research organizations for instance NARO have deliberately developed high yielding varieties like long 5, long 5H, provided extension services country wide, removed import taxi agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, and machinery like tractors, widen market through regional integration. Despite the numerous efforts by the government and NGO’s maize production and profitability amongst small scale farmers has remained low amidst large chunks of land, abundant labor force, easy access to inputs, favourable climatic conditions and ready market.
