The use of irony in Luganda fables : A case study of irony in selected Luganda fables
Abstract
The research looks at how irony enriches meaning in selected Buganda fables. It was carried out using a qualitative research design with the use of interviews, recording of different Buganda fables and how they are depicted among individuals during storytelling times. The research looked at irony as a means of enriching meaning in storytelling. The study looks at how irony develops meaning of fables and how different characters in fables portray irony. In this case, the elders are well versed with irony as compared to the young ones because the elders encounter different forms of irony in their lives. Different fables present different models of irony, verbal, where what is said is the opposite of what is meant by the speaker, dramatic irony where the characters in the fable are not aware of what is really taking place but the audience is aware. Situational irony where characters are going through life events they did not expect. The different fables selected present different ironies, some present one, and others more. In general, the different ironies presented in different fables bring out the intended meaning of the fable. In conclusion, the study gives irony a credit in enriching fables.
