dc.description.abstractPlectranthus cyaneus is a local plant with medicinal properties such as anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties. Peptic ulcers are intestinal disorders (wounds) that are affecting the largest population today. Different plant spPlecies such as Plectranthus cyaneus, black jack, and tick berry bush are used locally to treat ulcers though these methods pose some challenges. The objectives of this study were to document traditional knowledge about the control of ulcers and to classify the phytochemical compounds in these plant species. Results showed that people use various plant species such as Plectranthus cyaneus, Bidden pilosa, Lantana camara and Ngai camphor in combination to control ulcers. Classes of phytochemical compounds found in Plectranthus cyaneus, Bidden pilosa, Lantana camara and Ngai camphor included alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and phenols. However, not all of them were present in all the plant species. From this study, we can conclude that indigenous knowledge when exploited and validated scientifically, it can be useful in controlling ulcers which offers an economic and health benefit to most people who can’t afford use of modern medicines and also improve the health sector, thus reducing the cases of ulcers in the community. We also concluded that Plectrathus cyaneus was not enough to control ulcers but they are used in combination to increase the effectiveness of the drug thus concentration of the phytochemical compounds was a major factor in this study.en_US
