An assessment of the legal regime in Uganda in combating social media misuse and promoting mental health
Abstract
This study explores the challenges that people in Uganda face due to social media use, resulting from rapid technological advancements. The researcher examines various social media platforms (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat), their usage, and governing rules. The legal framework, both national and international, is also investigated, highlighting its impact on mental health. Social media is widely used for communication, education, journalism, and entertainment, but its abuse is prevalent. The researcher also investigates mental health, its manifestations, and how social media contributes to its rise. Specifically, the study focuses on the correlation between social media usage and mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and cyberbullying. The researcher aims to identify the gaps in the current legal framework and provide recommendations for policymakers, social media companies, and individuals to mitigate the negative effects of social media on mental health.
