A new generation
Abstract
This research project is a poetry collection entitled “A New Generation.” It centers around contemporary issues such as work, politics, leadership, relationships, culture, global warming, poverty, wealth, love, marriage, beauty and health. These issues make up the themes and main ideas in the poetry collection. I wrote every poem using simple and comprehensible language so that young readers find it easy to relate with the ideas and experiences put across. The title “A New Generation” symbolizes the Post-modern world. It stands for a society where people with good moral values and integrity tend to navigate life better than those without morality and integrity. It is also the title of a key poem in this collection, which hinges on the idea of change in the post-modern world. The themes and ideas discussed in this poetry collection are part and parcel of the contemporary world, making them inseparable from the New Generation. The major objective of this poetry collection is to engage readers in a dialogue where authentic solutions to personal and social problems are generated. This is done by using the language of poetry to create awareness about the prevalence of personal-social problems and undertake the reader in a solution-finding mission aimed at making the contemporary world a better place to live in. The intended audience for this project is the youth of Uganda today. This is because they are all, in one way or another, affected by the issues being explored in the poems. They will henceforth find this poetry collection didactic, reflective, relevant, intriguing, informative, and entertaining. However, I am quite sure that young people everywhere around the world will also fall in love with this poetry collection because some of the issues and ideas it explores cut across national boundaries. The main language used as a means of communication in this dissertation is English. However, two poems are written in Langi – my mother tongue. In such a case, a direct translation of the poem is provided. The arrangement of poems in this dissertation follows an alphabetical order, with each poem numbered in pages as depicted in the table of contents. In conclusion, there is a need to engage the youths of the 21st century in a literary dialogue so as to raise possible solutions to issues affecting them. The literary pieces included in this research project are meant to play a major role in this engagement.
