Social demographic factors associated with domestic violence among female youths between the age of 15 to 35 years in Maganjo Wakiso District

Abstract

Globally, there is wide variation in the prevalence of domestic violence among female youths both in developed and developing countries. This study was an investigation on socio demographic factors associated with domestic violence among female youths aged 15-35 years in Maganjo, Wakiso district. The study was guided by three objectives which included; to examine the relationship between education level and domestic violence experienced by female youths aged 15-35 years in Maganjo Wakiso district, to establish the influence of partner’s employment status and domestic violence among female youths aged 15 to 35 in Maganjo Wakiso district. The study used a case study design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods such as structured questionnaires and interviews. The case study method was deemed to be most desirable method for gaining holistic, in-depth insights into an inquiry into the sociodemographic characteristics linked with domestic abuse among female youths aged 15-35 years. The researcher selected 28 respondents (victimized women and counselors) utilizing non-probability methods of purposive sampling based. From the study findings, it was found out that education level was significantly associated with domestic violence experienced by female aged 15-35years based on submissions by respondents where education of the spouse determined his reactions to the wife. It was also discovered that there existed a significant relationship between partner’s employment status and domestic violence among female youths aged 15-35 years. Furthermore, it was found out that age of partners is a significant determinant of domestic violence against female youths aged 15 to 35 years except in a few circumstances where it doesn’t matter. The study recommends that at educational level the activities to be undertaken should gear to create awareness among people so that domestic violence cases will be minimized to its lowest level within the communities. National legislation should introduce effective legal and welfare provisions. Community should focus on preventing repeated violence and the maintenance of a healthy relationship between the survivor and the perpetrator. Police should link directly to the survivors so that they can solve domestic violence problems at immediate grounds to support change in the perception of society so that violence against female youth
