Linguistic devices in selected Lusoga proverbs

Abstract

Proverbs are significant tools of conversation among the Basoga and Africans in particular. Among African writers, proverbs play a major role in their literally works and it gives a touch of African uniqueness, authenticity and identity. With proverbs, the writers project their culture, tradition, messages and communication in the language used by the Basoga. The use of proverbs in literary works does not just occur by chance but their importance. They are naturally linguistic tools loaded with scared meaning and roles both in literary works as the vehicle of culture project. On the other hand, they give the work in which they are used to touch originality. This research will examine the linguistic devices in selected lusoga proverbs I have used in my research project like, similes, metaphors, personification, allusion, alteration, irony. However, my project is going to focus on metaphors, similes, personification and irony. I will also give my point of view about proverbs and what different scholars talk about proverbs and the use of linguistic devices in selected Lusoga proverbs. In addition, my research was carried out using many different methods during my collection of data. For example; questionnaires, interviews and phone recording. In this project, we shall see how the Basoga use linguistic devices in their communication and proverbs. In conclusion, I analyzed all the proverbs I selected linguistically and how they are used in the selected Lusoga proverbs and gave the lessons and interpretation of the proverbs from Lusoga
