The form and function of imagery in folktales: a study of selected folktales of the itesots.

Abstract

Ateso folktales are a rich and diverse collection of oral literature that have been passed down through generations in the Ateso community of Uganda. These folktales serve as a means of transmitting cultural knowledge and values to future generations, and as such, they play an important role in shaping the cultural identity and worldview of the Ateso people. One of the central features of Ateso folktales is the use of the various forms of imagery, which are depicted in a variety of the folktales. This research project examines the use of imagery in Ateso folktales through a thematic analysis of a sample of folktales collected from community members. The study aims to identify the ways in which imagery are portrayed and are significant in these narratives and the messages that are conveyed through their usage. The analysis draws on theoretical frameworks from folklore studies, and cultural anthropology to analyze the language, themes, and cultural values embedded in the folktales. The research questions include: How does imagery contribute to the portrayal of cultural values and beliefs in Ateso folktales and how do they enhance the narratives? How does the use of imagery vary across different genres or types of Ateso folktales (e.g., origin myths, cautionary tales, animal fables)? How do Ateso folktales use animal characters as vehicles for conveying cultural messages through imagery? How do Ateso folktales use sensory imagery (e.g., sight, sound, smell) to immerse audiences in the narrative world? How do Ateso folktales employ metaphor and allegory to convey moral lessons concepts through imagery?How are the folktales used as a vehicle for society transformation? By answering these questions, the study aims to contribute to a broader understanding of the significance of imagery in Ateso folktales and how they contribute to the cultural construction of the Ateso society and the ways in which folklore serves as a site for the transmission of cultural knowledge and values. The analysis reveals that Ateso folktales utilize vivid imagery to illustrate key messages and moral lessons. The narratives often emphasize the importance of moral virtues such as honesty and bravery. The study also highlights the ways in which Ateso folktales reflect the cultural values and beliefs of the community, including the importance of community cohesion, respect for tradition, and the role of elders as sources of wisdom and guidance. The use of imagery in Ateso folktales, therefore, serves as a means of transmitting cultural knowledge and values to future generations. The findings of this study have practical implications for promoting positive values and behaviors among children and youth. The study highlights the potential of Ateso folktales as a resource for promoting positive values and behaviors among children and youth.
