Design and fabrication of a remote controlled scissor car jack
Abstract
This project involved designing a remote-control system for a scissor car jack. A Scissor Jack is a
mechanical device used to easily lift a vehicle off the ground, to gain access to sections underneath
vehicles for maintenance or to change the wheel. The most important fact of a jack is that it gives
the user a mechanical advantage by changing the rotational force on power screw into linear
motion, allowing user to lift a heavy car to the required height. It is called a scissor jack as the
structure consists of diagonal metal components that expand and contract in the same way as a pair
of scissors. The system consists of the scissor jack mechanism, an automated motor with a gear
mechanism and also constructing a unit that can be used to jack up any regular car as controlled
by the transmitter to the receiver. The receiver circuit is controlled by microcontroller. The motor
with gearing system lifts mechanism. The prototype includes a 12 V battery to power the motor.
It also involved the designing and fabricating a radio transmission transmitter circuit capable of
transmitting a coded frequency. The receiver circuit is able to receive the transmitted radio signals
and be able to process and decode the control signals for the upward movement of the jack. The
control mechanism consisting of the dc motor and the link mechanism was arranged such that it
allows for smooth control and well fabricated and attached to the scissor car jack.
