The impact of displacing slum dwellers in Kampala city: a case study of Mulimira zone Bukoto ward in Kampala - Nakawa division
Abstract
Displacing people is both an urban and rural problem. In recent years, attention has been drawn to the fact that now more than half of the world’s population is urbanized, and the bulk of these urban dwellers are living in the worst condition. This research explored the context to which Mulimira neighborhood in Bukoto ward Nakawa division has been affected by displacement and its threats on the physical environment. The researcher explored other people’s data related to displacing slum dwellers. It estimated that 500 people suffered from force evictions every year, women and children are most time suffer the most from the displacement. The researcher applied various techniques of data collection which include; interviewing, questionnaires, on site observation, photography, field investigation and sketching. The findings revealed that 51 households were displaced by the construction of North bypass express way, 20 households by drainage construction and floods, over the period of 5years. With this happening they expect more future evicting due to powerline relate effect on human body. However, the major threats in the area are; population, infrastructure development, and government policy on land management. Therefore, the effect of the displacement carries both negative and positive, as 3/4 of the residence submit that they profit from it. With the above effect of displacement of slum dwellers, it has left gross effect on the lives of citizen and urbanization. The researcher came up with various mitigation measures to solve the influx challenges that arises with displacement of people, some include; creating administrative unit, improving the transport system, working closely with community, subsidization of the slum area mega project, adoption of PPP in Urban renewal, and appropriate budgeting.
