Abstract
This study examined the role of the Kisenyi-Makerere ecotone in stabilizing its constituent rural and urban ecosystems in Kampala, Uganda. Ecotones are transition zones between two ecosystems that often exhibit unique ecological characteristics. Rapid urban expansion threatens ecotones, yet they provide critical ecosystem services. Using a mixed methods approach involving literature review, observations, surveys, and interviews, this study analyzed the environmental, economic, and social contributions of the ecotone. Key findings show the ecotone supports abundant biodiversity, including habitats for unique and threatened species. It provides ecosystem services like water purification, carbon sequestration, and climate regulation valued at over 90 million UGX on average. The ecotone generates livelihoods through farming, resource collection, and conservation jobs. However, challenges like pollution and habitat loss threaten its sustainability. Recommendations include integrated land use planning, community-based stewardship, and policies to conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study provides insights into the functioning of peri-urban ecotones in the region and strategies to balance urban growth with ecological stability. Findings can inform sustainable development policies in Kampala and beyond.
