    The effectiveness of irony in selected Madi folktales.

    Abstract
    This qualitative study explores the symbolic dimensions of selected Madi folktales. The research aims to identify the use of irony in Madi folktales and to analyze irony as presented by characters of Mr Hare in Madi folktales and other characters The study employed both field-based and library-based methods, drawing on a variety of data sources. Fieldwork was conducted in Adjumani districts of Uganda, involving interviews and observations to collect Madi folktales n their natural contexts. Additionally, a review of relevant literature on Madi oral tradition and symbolic language was undertaken. The findings of the study present the English translations of the Madi folktales analyzed, along with an identification and discussion of the symbolic elements embedded within them. The analysis explores how these symbolic representations reflect the worldviews, values, and conceptual frameworks of the Madi people. Furthermore, the study examines the effectiveness of the symbolic language in conveying cultural knowledge, moral lessons, and philosophical insights through the medium of Madi folktales . The research contributes to the understanding of Madi folktales and the role of irony inshaping cultural expression and transmission of meaning. The insights gained from this study have implications for preserving and promoting the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of the Madi community and conveyance of messages.
