ABSTRACT Energy is a very essential resource in industry today and all over the world. But as useful as it may be, it is also scarce and costly thereby creating a need for its optimal utilization by proper management. Proper management entails proper record keeping involving energy consumption, identifying and detecting symptoms of energy wastage, various methods of energy conservation, frequent energy audits and comparison with benchmarks to identify high wastage areas/equipment. The economic and environmental unsustainability of present energy production and use calls for a more rational use of energy while simultaneously protecting the environment. In this respect, a comprehensive energy audit was performed at Uganda Baati Limited and mainly focused on the energy intensive equipment and systems to investigate and identify energy saving opportunities at the plant. The energy saving opportunities realized cover electrical systems and lighting systems. Taking a close look at the ways in which energy is consumed at the plant, I am confident they can reduce their energy consumption without affecting the production capacity of the plant. Thus in tackling energy wastage, a systematic criterion and commitment should start from the top management and its critical if the plant is trying to reduce its energy bills. (1.948Mb)
