Percieved social support, self-esteem and hopelessness among urban adolescents

Abstract

The study examined the relationship between perceived social support, self-esteem and hopelessness. A correlational survey design with a sample of 216 adolescents selected by use of simple random sampling was undertaken. Data was collected by use of a self-administered questionnaire focusing on the study variables and was analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 24. Spearman correlation coefficient was used to test the significance of the hypotheses. Results revealed that there is a significant relationship between social support and self-esteem, as well as a negative significant relationship between social support and hopelessness among urban adolescents. However results showed that there no significant relationship between percieved social support and hopelessness.
