    Abstract
Examination malpractices are a huge problem currently facing the univer- sity. One of the ways these malpractices are carried out is through the forgery of examination permits which allows unauthorised people to access exami- antion rooms. This breach in the access control mechanism presents a number of problems such as the integrity of results being put to question. The purpose of this project is to develop an Examination Verifcation System that will be used to verify student’s eligibilty to sit for exams and grant them access to exam rooms. This system is meant to replace the cur- rent manual system that employs issuance of manual permits which are sus- ceptible to forgeries. The scope of the project was within Makerere Un- versity. NFC cards were used in the project to act as the smart cards in the student ID’s.The project presents a number of benefits such as reduced breaching of the current access control system used in examinations, increased efficiency, improved accountabilty on who sat for exams, time saving and re- duction in expenditure.A literature review was done highlighting the extent of the problem, the current technology being used to address similar chal- lenges, previous work done in relation to the problem and how this project aims to better work done in the past. The Examination Verification System consists of a mobile application that is used to read and write data from student ID’s which are embedded with NFC tags to store student information. These smart cards are presented by students at the examination venue and using an Android phone with NFC capabilty, are scanned. The information on the card allows the invigilator to establish whether a student is eligible to sit for an exam by displaying the pertinent information. This eliminates the need for the printing of man- ual permits and all associated disadvantages with the current process.A web system was created to allow students view their registration and payment status online effectively allowing students to view an online permit .A de- tailed description of the system is provided in the subsequent sections of the document.
