Currently students can access their information by the use of the Internet which loads them with
an extra cost burden, not to mention the design inefficiencies that characterize current systems.
They can also use manual systems that are associated with inconveniences such as congestion
at results notice boards and their vandalism, time wastage, long documentation procedures,
bureaucracy, and lack of accountability.
Our main objective was to develop a user friendly, easy to access USSD Students’ Information
Management System to enable students access their information at any time, from anywhere at no
cost and without use of the internet and to also enable parents to access their students’ information
like the academic results and financial statement from any place of convenience which enables
them to keep track of their children’s academic progress.
A review and study of research works from external sources like articles, journals, internet that
were related to the project was carried out to point out different views in relation to USSD
Students’ Information management system.
For the success of this project, interviews, observation, questionnaires were the techniques used to
gather the requirements for developing a USSD Students’ Information management system. The
requirements were analyzed and the system designed using the context diagram, data flow diagram
and an Entity relationship diagram for process modelling and data modelling respectively.
We give a full description of the analysis and the design of the USSD Students’ information
management system under which there are user requirements, functional requirements and nonfunctional requirements. We examine the current system with respect to operations in Makerere
University, College of Computing and information sciences, and give an in-depth analysis of the
requirements of the system as well as the design parameters.
Furthermore, we give an overview of the implementation, testing and validation of the USSD
Students’ information management system, including screenshots of the system. We also involve
the discussion of challenge.
