Effect of the youth livelihood programme on youth unemployment in Nangabo Subcounty Wakiso District
Abstract
The study examined the effects of Youth Livelihood Program on youth unemployment in Nangabo Sub County. The study objectives included the assessment of the components of the youth livelihood program in Nangabo Sub-County; the role of the youth livelihood fund in employment creation for the youth; and the challenges faced by the youth in accessing and utilizing the Youth Livelihood Fund in Nangabo Sub County. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were used. Quantitative data were collected data using questionnaires, observations and interviews from a sample of 124 respondents (68 meal and 56 female youth). Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The main components of YLP implemented in Nangabo sub county were reported to be youth skilling/ development programs (47.6 percent) followed by the livelihood/credit support at (27%). The main challenges in accessing the fund included: (33%) and (18%) reported that inadequate funding and Inadequate technical backstopping for YIGs respectively are the challenges faced by the youth in accessing and utilization of the livelihood fund. Furthermore (32%), (48%) and (23%) reported corruption among government officials, politics and socio-cultural barriers are among the challenges faced by the youth in accessing and utilization of the livelihood fund. The employment among the youth livelihood program are those in the youth small scale business (46.0 percent) followed by those in farming (20.2 percent)
