Mechanical properties and applications of Laterised concrete in central Uganda.
Abstract
The study research covers investigation of the mechanical properties of laterised concrete in central
Uganda, the laterite aggregates were obtained from Kampala, wakiso and Mukono districts. It
involved hand crushing of laterite boulders. Laboratory tests such as sieve analysis, AIV test, ACV
test, Compressive strength test, split tensile and flexural strength tests on 28-day cured laterised
concrete specimens to ascertain the mechanical properties and application of laterised concrete
were done.
The detailed results shown in chapter four of the report indicate that aggregates were uniformly
distributed from the sieve analysis, the AIV which was 29% which is relevant in applications of
laterised concrete for pavement construction and the laterite from central Uganda produced
concrete with lower properties as compared to the normal conventional aggregate concrete.
Generally, laterised concrete can be used for various engineering purposes ranging from
composition in structures of low rise buildings, for patio slabs and pathways, pavement kerbs,
concrete blocks and paver blocks.
