dc.description.abstract | This study examines the prevalence of low birth weight among infants and its association with
maternal risk factors in Uganda. Fetal weight at birth is a major determinant of survival, physical
growth and mental development of an infant. According to Uganda Demographic Health survey
2011 cross sectional data, 13.5% of 452 recorded births were low weight among teenage
mothers, 9.7% of 1414 among mothers ranging from 20-34 years of age and 7.9% of 203 among
those ranging from 35-49. This clearly shows that the prevalence of low birth weight is quite
high. Multiple logistic regression was performed to determine the relationship of maternal risk
factors and low birth weight. Logistic regression is a statistical model for analyzing a dataset in
which one or more independent variables determine an outcome. This study emphasizes the need
for improving maternal health, weight gain during pregnancies, prevention and proper
management of risk factors along with improving socioeconomic and educational status of
mothers. | en_US |
