Stress, self-esteem, and depression among adolescent students in Nsambya Secondary School Kampala district
Abstract
The study on Stress, Self-esteem, and Depression among Adolescent Students was conducted from Nsambya Secondary School Kampala District. The purpose of the study was to find out the relationship between stress, self-esteem and depression among adolescents. The study objectives to find out whether stress and self-esteem are related among adolescents, to find out whether self-esteem and depression are related among adolescents, to find out whether stress and depression are significantly related among adolescents. The study used research study design and particularly quantitative approach. A sample size of children aged 14 to 21yrs was used as well as non -random sampling technique, questionnaires were used. The researcher measured participants using self-administered questions where each respondent was required to tick the best alternative. A structured Questionnaires were administered to participant. Data collected where saved, edited and recorded for the purpose of establishing if they were correctly filled. Data was analyzed using SPSS, descriptive tables, with frequencies, percentages were presented.
Results concluded that there was no significant relationship between self-esteem and stress, self-esteem and depression among adolescents, as Taylor et al., (2010) indicated but there was correlation between stress and depression. The study recommended actions that may be suitable for implemented as wholistic identification of the best time, doing tasks that need the most energy, having a list of things to do and well arranged in order, and balancing interests, Avoid doing too much at once, Taking breaks, having good sleep, physical activities, and Eating healthy food
Therefore, the study concluded that techniques of stress management can improve people’s self-esteem, which can be as a buffer against psychological disorders plus improving both personal and professional quality of life.
