Perceived social support, self-esteem and hopelessness among urban adolescents.

Abstract

Therese arch aimed at examining the relationship between self-esteem, perceived social support and hopelessness among urban adolescents.A sample of 100 respondents from Kampala suburbs(52 girls and 48 boys)between the ages of 16-19 years were used.This cross-sectional study was quantitative in nature and a correlational survey design was adopted.Simple random sampling technique was used for selection of participants.Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists(SPSS version 23). Spearman’s Rank Correlation(rs)was adopted to test the significance of the hypotheses and the findings showed that there is a significant negative relationship between self-esteem and hopelessness among adolescents. However, results revealed that there is no significant relationship between perceived social support and self-esteem as well as perceived social support and hopelessness among urban adolescents.
