Peer influence, academic stress and academic performance among Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences students
Abstract
The study aimed at examining the relationship between peer influence, academic stress and academic performance among Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences Students. The objectives of the study were; to examine the relationship between peer influence and academic stress among students. to examine the relationship between peer influence and academic performance among students and to examine the relationship between academic stress and academic performance among students.The study focused on students of College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Makerere University Kampala.Correlation results in Table 3 show there is no significant relationship between peer influence and academic performance among university students(r= -.089, p= .377). The p value (.377) is bigger than 0.05 in magnitude.Correlation results in Table 5 show that there is no significant relationship between peer influence and academic stress among university students(r= -.124, p= .221). Correlation results show in Table 7 show that there is a significant positive relationship between academic stress and academic performance among university students(r= .197*, p= .049). The study findings indicate that there is no significant relationship between peer influence and academic performance among university students. In addition, the study findings revealed that there was no significant relationship between peer influence and academic stress among university students. Furthermore, the study findings indicated that there was significant relationship between academic stress and academic performance among university students.Recommendations were; School administrations and various stakeholders should equip adolescents with knowledge and skills on how to cope with stress since it has a lot of deleterious effects on the adolescents.Adolescents should also make sure they look out for stressful situations and adopt healthy ways of coping with stress.School authorities should also put in place counseling sessions for students who are affected by mental health disorders like depression since they may affect the overall functioning of the adolescents.
