    Factors affecting farmers’ participation in cooperative milk collection centre in Ngoma sub-county in Nakaseke district

    Abstract
    The major purpose of the study was to assess the factors affecting farmer’s participation in cooperative milk collection centers in Ngoma subcounty in Nakaseke district. The specific objectives of the study were; to determine the characteristics of the farmers that participate in the cooperative milk collection centers as well as those that do not, to determine if there is a difference in incomes of the farmers that participate in the programs and those that do not(whether there is improved incomes or not)and the challenges that the farmers are facing those that are participating and those who are not(if there is a challenge that those who are involved in these collection centers. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. Data was analyzed using the Chi-square and descriptive statistics. Qualitative approach aimed at obtaining data expressed in non-numerical terms. Quantitative data analysis helped to analyze and categorize detain terms of frequencies and percentages. Simple descriptive tabulations were used for quantitative analysis. According to the study results the major challenge that the farmers are facing those that are participating in the programs and those that are not is limited access to market information (37%). Logistic regression results showed that age of the milk farmer, education level, access to market information and dairy yield per day have a negative significant relationship with farmer’s decision to participate in cooperative milk collection centers in Ngoma Sub-County in Nakaseke district since their p-values at less than 0.05.The study recommends that female headed households should be the focus of attention of any program aim to increase cooperative membership in Ngoma Sub County in Nakaseke District, Contact with extension agents and years of education of the household head should be improved, Programs, strategies and policies that are targeted at the achievement of increase agricultural productivity should be intensified in Ngoma Sub County in Nakaseke District
