Analyzing the performance of Urban Alleys in the Mbarara Central Business District.

Abstract

The study explores the performance of urban alleys in Mbarara Central Business District and suggesting strategies and interventions that can be applied to improve the quality of alleys in the CBD. Literature was reviewed to back up the study, data collection techniques such as observations, interviewing and use of questionnaires were used to collect data during field visits. A sample of individuals were interviewed to obtain the relevant information required for the study. It was found out that alleys in the Mbarara CBD to a larger extent no longer serve their initial purpose of service lane of utilities and passage and now act as commercial business centers. Recommendations proposed for the alleys include Orienting uses towards the alley to create a feeling of vibrancy and reduce potential for criminal activity, locate ground-floor commercial uses that encourage pedestrian activity in the alley and avoid large uninterrupted expanses of wall surfaces, among others.
