dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors contributing to be persistent child abuse in Katanga slum area, Kawempe division with the view to recommend on how child abuse can be reduced. The study was conducted in a particular area where the numbers of child abuse cases were high. It was conducted based on the following objectives; to contribute to efforts to eliminate child abuse through investigating the factors contributing to the persistent child abuse in the slum areas of Katanga, Kawempe division, to review the socio-cultural factors contributing to the persistent child abuse in Katanga, to assess the economic factors leading to the persistent child abuse and to assess level of knowledge on laws and policies in place safeguarding children’s rights and how they are enforced in Katanga area. The research adopted a cross-sectional qualitative research design. The study sample consisted of 63 respondents. The type of research instruments that were employed included; questionnaires, interviews and document reviews.
The findings and discussions revealed that child abuse took on different form at different levels in Katanga that is at the community level and household level. The study also revealed the socio-cultural and economic factors and knowledge of policies and laws have a significant role in child abuse in Katanga. More research has been proposed about the need to create awareness in the community on child abuse, sensitization of parents, teachers, the community and even the children on the persistence child abuse. More so, there is need or more research to be done in Katanga to bring more attention to the social problem. | en_US |
