Design and development of a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for small - medium scale Garages.

Abstract

This report focuses on the design and development of a Computerized Maintenance Management System for small to medium scale motor vehicle garages. The technological advancements in the motor vehicle industry and the inception of the Computerized Maintenance Management System have enhanced need for efficiency in the small to medium scale car garages so as to enable them to compete favorably in the ‘cut-throat’ industry.

An in-depth understanding of the several operations within the motor vehicle industry as well as the impact of the computerized maintenance management systems enabled me to highlight the problem at hand. A review of the pre-existing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems in terms of the services, costs, strengths, weaknesses of the most popular systems paved a foundation from which I started to customize a system for my target market.

Physical Information was gathered from different garages around Kampala .Interactions with the different owners gave me a direction to take and also highlighted what modules to focus on so as to achieve the desired results. The information that I received as well as the research done enabled me to develop an efficient and practical design.

A list of its requirements was created, such a system was conceptually designed, and finally an object oriented model was built based on the conceptual design. A conceptual design was created showing how the system will function when implemented. This design employed logical view and deployment view depicting the specific entities of the system and how these entities interact with one another. With the completed model a skeleton code in “PHP” further assisted me in the implementation process of the system.
